Weyburn Police Service Report

The Weyburn Police Service received 86 calls for service during the period of February 15th through the 21st, resulting in 20 charges for the week. Of the 20 charges, 12 were traffic violations, 7 were under the Criminal Code of Canada, and 1 under the City bylaw for a Dog at Large. The Criminal Code charges include Impaired Driving as well as charges of Assault and Uttering Threats.

On February 15th, Police responded to a single vehicle collision involving a vehicle veering off the street and striking a fence and tree. The driver, who was charged for Driving Without Due Care & Attention, required medical treatment for a non-life threatening injury but was otherwise okay. Police also received a reported fraud in which a resident suffered a significant financial loss. That matter is still under investigation.

On Tuesday, a requested well-being check on an adult female resulted in an adult male facing charges of Aggravated Assault, Choking, and Uttering Threats. Officers also responded to a report of two suspicious individuals in a parking lot but they were observed to be law-abiding.

Police received a report from another police agency advising of a sexual assault that allegedly occurred in Weyburn approximately a year ago. The matter was investigated and charges of Sexual Assault and Sexual Interference resulted.

Police responded to a RID (Report Impaired Driving) call which resulted in the vehicle being stopped and the driver being tested on an approved alcohol screening device. The test yielded a “Warn” result and the driver received a 3-day driver’s license suspension.

On February 18th, Police responded to a report of two unconscious individuals in a vehicle. Officers found the individuals to be conscious and did not require medical attention. A Standardized Field Sobriety Test was performed on the driver who consequently failed and was arrested for Impaired Care & Control of a Conveyance. A blood demand was made and the driver was transported to the Weyburn General Hospital for the purpose of providing a sample suitable for analysis. The driver received a 3-day driver’s license suspension and the vehicle was impounded. Further action is pending the result of the blood analysis.

On February 20th, Police were called to a local business in response to an individual who had been in the washroom for an extended period of time. The person was found conscious but was assessed by EMS personnel after admitting to overdosing.

A traffic stop conducted in the early morning hours of the 21st resulted in an adult male being charged with Impaired Driving. The officer noticed signs of impairment and the driver was transported back to the WPS office for further testing after failing a roadside screening test for alcohol. Also on Sunday, WPS members responded to an urgent medical call at a residence along the city boundary. Officers administered Narcan to an adult male who was unconscious due to a suspected drug overdose. EMS arrived on scene and provided immediate medical attention. The male was transported to the Weyburn general Hospital for further treatment but his condition was critical.

WPS members also responded to matters such as Health Order violations, false alarms, dog complaints, parking complaints, peace keeping, gas drive-offs, well-being checks and fraudulent phone calls throughout the week.
